Network Marketing (aka MLM) has been twisted and turned into some incredibly funny myths/flat out lies. So I am here to do some myth busting and clear the air on some of these and provide you with some relevant information and humor along the way.

Before we begin I want to be completely transparent, I love Network Marketing. I am a huge advocate of normalizing Network Marketing, showing people their true potential with Network Marketing, and showing people how to do Network Marketing the right way.

So here we go with the top 10 myths about Network Marketing with some truth bombs on how ficticious these myths really are.

As you read through the list, you might find yourself laughing at the ridiculousness or the myth I am explaining or how most of them are completely contradicting of one another. And you know what they say, there are two sides to every story, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. :) 

Let's begin:

  1. Network Marketing is a pyramid scheme - There are a few things you should know about pyramid schemes: 1) they are illegal in the US and have been since the 90's 2) they don't have a product to sell 3) they require you to spend a large sum of money up front (thousands). Network Marketing companies on the other hand are legal and follow the guidelines provided by the FTC. They also have actual products to sell and do not require large sums of money upfront.   2. Network Marketing is easy - The truth is quite the opposite, just like starting any business and expecting it to succeed, a Network Marketing business takes work! Now don't get me wrong it is definitely easier than answering to someone else, having to clock in and out, or being denied time off with your family, but hard work and effort are still required.

  3. Network Marketing is a get-rich-quick scheme - Again, Network Marketing takes work. It takes time and effort to build a sustainable business. If anyone is promising you a large sum of money in your first few weeks or months, you should probably just go ahead and run the other direction because what they are offering you is lie. You should plan to go into your Network Marketing business like you would any other business and plan on investing time and money to make a long term profit.

  4. The market is saturated - I can't tell you how many times I have heard people say that they can't be successful in Network Marketing or with a specific company because there are too many people already doing it. The truth is, is that you can create success if you truly want to and if you know how to set yourself apart from all the others. In addition to those two factors, sheer numbers comparing the number of Network Marketers to the world population (20 million to 7.6 billion), tell us that there are more fish in the sea waiting for what we are offering.

  5. Only people at the top make money - With a good compensation plan (which is one of the most important factors when choosing a Network Marketing Company to join) anyone can create success in Network Marketing if they are willing to work for it. There is no reason that a newer consultant/distributor can't make just as much money if not more than the people who have been a part of the company since the beginning of time.

  6. No one makes money in Network Marketing - Again, this is truly where the compensation other factors that are going to determine your success in Network Marketing come in to play, but Network Marketing is possibly one of the best ways to make money while owning your own business. Just going off of my own personal experience here, Network Marketing has literally made it possible for me to not only replace my income, but also my husband's income and retire him from the corporate world. I am not the only one either, we have so many friends and partners who have been able to do the same.

  7. People are in it only for themselves - If you get in with a good Network Marketing company that has a good compensation plan, it will encourage people to help others who join them rather than feed them to the wolves. One of my favorite things about our Network Marketing company is that the compensation plan eliminates the element of greed or selfishness and financially rewards us for helping our downline and crossline. It reminds me of a saying that I hold near and dear to my heart in life and business and that is "we rise by lifting others".

  8. You have to be an extrovert and know a lot of people- Ok these last three are going to be my favorite because I absolutely love going against the grain here. Most of the successful people I know are so far from an extrovert it's not even funny, especially those of us who choose to grow our Network Marketing businesses online. If you are an extrovert, that is wonderful and will surely help you grow your business, and if you're more of an introvert that is wonderful too, and you can still find a way to create success (*cough cough* online) that is true to you. And as for knowing a lot of people, I started my Network Marketing business with about 5 friends and it has since grown into a 7 figure business. I think it's safe to say that you don't need to know a lot of people. ;)

  9. You have to spend lots of money - Every business will require you to spend money because in our economy you must spend money to make money. You can't get something for nothing. In the world of Network Marketing it is no different. Most Network Marketing companies will ask that you order a certain amount to ensure that you are trying and using the products so you can effectively and authentically share them with others. Coming from a former massage studio owner, most order requirements are much MUCH more affordable than owning a traditional brick and mortar business.

  10. You have to host home parties - Maybe in the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's the home parties were a thing, but it is 2018. Times have changed. People have changed. People would rather text you than have long phone chats or you show up at their house. People don't want you to come over and invade their space, heck they hardly even answer the door anymore! This is a new era of Network Marketing, and it doesn't involve one. single. home party. Think about it like this, when you are wanting to buy something, where do you turn to do it? Or to look at reviews or ask for recommendations? EVERYTHING is done online nowadays, which is exactly why we created our Instagram Secrets course.
